The Amazon basin of Brazil is a fascinating place to visit, particularly for a fly fisherman. The Amazon River is huge, up to a mile wide thousands of miles above its mouth. The large season rainfall causes the water level to vary 30 feet or more over the year, flooding the jungle for many miles. During high water the fish forage far from the river channels, inaccessible to anglers. In low water the fish are concentrated and fishing is hot.
The most popular target is the Peacock Bass, shown in the picture, of which there are several species, but there are dozens of other fish that will hit a fly.
