Most of my volunteer trips have been with Earthwatch Institute. Earthwatch is in the business of funding scientific field research. Earthwatch funds come in part from a “share of expenses” paid by volunteers to participate in these expeditions. These payments, plus transportation cost, are tax deductible to US citizens. Earthwatch expeditions are short-term volunteer opportunities directly assisting scientists in their field research, not conventional tours, eco tourism nor adventure travel. Most projects are 10-14 days long, and can be anywhere in the world. Topics span a wide range of scientific study. For a brochure on a recent Earthwatch expedition, take a look at Elephant Seals of the Falkland Islands.
I also attended research expeditions with the Wild Salmon Center which involved salmon and trout fishing on the Kamchatka Peninsula. They have recently reorganized their expeditions under another non-profit organization, Wild Salmon River Expeditions.
Check the Links section of this site for links to Earthwatch and Wild Salmon River Expeditions.
For other possibilities, you can do a search engine check on the Web for “Volunteer Expeditions”.

I have written a book,” Whales, Termites and Dragons” which describes my experiences on volunteer expeditions. Click here for a description.
